Antigua Casa Figueras; Barcelona
Antigua Casa Figueras; Barcelona

Details

The famous Antigua Casa Figueras, situated midway up the Ramblas in the heart of Barcelona, has long been established as a chocolate shop. Designed by Antoni Guell in 1908 its gentle art-nouveau features make it perhaps the most charismatic shop front in a city that boasts more art-nouveau buildings than any other city in the world. 29 Avenue Rapp, Paris
29 Avenue Rapp, Paris

Details

29 Avenue Rapp is situated in the Eiffel Tower Quarter of Paris, an area where everything is on a monumental scale. A prime example of Art Nouveau architecture, architect Jules Lavirotte has created a doorway lavish in its use of flower motifs intermingling with female figures, in a manner that is deliberately erotic and which was considered subversive at the time of its completion in 1901. The Michelin Building, London
The Michelin Building, London

Details

The Michelin Building stands as a landmark at the top end of the Fulham Road in South Kensington. Once the headquarters of the Michelin Tyre Company it was more recently saved from likely demolition and its delightful art-nouveau features lovingly restored by Terence Conran to host the Conran shop and the famous Bibendum Restaurant. Il Campo; Sienna
Il Campo; Sienna

Details

Il Campo in the heart of Sienna dating back to 1250 is most famous for hosting the dramatic Palio horse race. The square is lined with lively pavement cafes and I have tried to catch the al fresco atmosphere of this stunning setting. CLICK ON THE IMAGE FOR FURTHER INFORMATION

Calle Mercaderes; Havana
Calle Mercaderes; Havana

Details

NEW...Situated on Calle Mercaderes in Habana vieja (old Havana) this shady building is located only a few doors away from the Hotel Ambos Mundos where Ernest hemmingway lived in 1939 before deciding to settle on the island. The leaves of a tree cast shadows over the façade of a typical spanish-colonial style building in this unusually quiet backstreet where local schoolchildren enjoy the shade. Palazzo Tiopolo, Venice
Palazzo Tiopolo, Venice

Details

Palazzo Tiopolo, as with Ca D'Oro, features the Grand Canal in Venice. It takes the form of a landscape study of the ornate doors and windows at water level set against the crumbling walls where the stucco work has crumbled to reveal the terracotta tones of the brickwork beneath. A sense of perspective is created with the gondola and coloured mooring mast in the foreground. It al combines to create a tranquil composition rich in colour and detail.

Victoria St; Edinburgh
Victoria St; Edinburgh

Details

Situated in the heart of The Old Town curving down from the Royal Mile to the Grassmarket, Victoria St. features many of the brightly painted shops which characterise this area of Edinburgh. The colours reflect on to the wet surface of the cobble stones and combine to make this a rich and vibrant piece. CLICK ON THE IMAGE FOR FURTHER INFORMATION

Venetian Alley
Venetian Alley

Details

Another typical Venetian scene, though one less drawn, is the colourful washing hanging between shuttered windows high above back alleyways, which criss-cross the city. I have chosen this in a fish eye perspective in an attempt to create the feeling of narrowness and height as it is experienced when wandering usually perfectly lost.

Bridge at Longleat House
Bridge at Longleat House

Details

The ornamental bridge at Longleat House and the Orangery at Kensington Palace are twinned together. Dating from the same period they are linked together by their use of classical proportion. The colour rich Summer hues drawn from the surrounding trees adds to an air of tranquility, and gives emphasis to the earthen terra-cotta's of the stone and brickwork. Honfleur; Normandy
Honfleur; Normandy

Details

At the turn of the 20th century, Honfleur established itself as the seaside haunt of Parisian aristocracy. It quickly became a centre for music, and art and much of this tradition remains today. The town is bustling with visitors to the many galleries and restaurants, but it is the view of the harbour side with brick buildings reaching 8 or 9 storeys with sailing and fishing boats moored below which combine to make this a unique setting for this picture. Inspired by the west wing entrance of the Palm House at Kew. Decimus Burtons famous glass and steel structure reveals the tropical plant life within, seen through the long shadows of the evening sun. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CLICK ON THE IMAGE.

Ca D'Oro, Venice
Ca D'Oro, Venice

Details

Since studying architecture I have always longed to visit Venice - The gently crumbling fusion of western Gothic and eastern Byzantine architecture with the lagoon lapping at it's doorways makes Venice one of the architectural wonders of the world and an obvious choice for my latest work. The Ca D'Oro or 'Golden Palace' sitting on the Grand Canal is an outstanding building rich in coloured marble and carved stone. Colonades and balconies create contrasts of light and shade which are picked out in the reflection on the canal. Built in 1436 by the Doge's Palace architects the palace was bequeathed together with its collection of paintings, furniture and medals to the city of Venice in 1916. Manhattan Broadway, New York
Manhattan Broadway, New York

Details

The sun sets on Broadway towards Greenwich village and the facade of this tenement, with its typically New York escapes, comes alive. The shop below with it's lights injects a burst of vivid colours into the view. CLICK ON THE IMAGE FOR FURTHER INFORMATION

Manhattan Apartments, New York
Manhattan Apartments, New York

Details

The almost black 'brownstone' of this apartment block contrasts sharply with the colours of the morning sun reflected in the windows. It almost appears as if the building is on fire: Like my other drawing to feature New York: Broadway, Apartment depicts the distinct iron escape stairs which betray its New York origin. Palm House; North Wing, Kew
Palm House; North Wing, Kew

Details

The Tropical Plant House inspired by the Palm House at Kew brought me from the last Millennium to this one and so I think of it affectionately (though perhaps unwisely!) as my Millennium Dome. The dome like curves of Decimus Burtons unique creation gives a fish eye lens quality to the view from which the white doorway jumps out at you, palm tree at either side, to invite you in. Evening sunlight playing through the palm leaves throw shadows on to the flagstone threshold.

Sagrada Familia; Barcelona
Sagrada Familia; Barcelona

Details

Acknowledged as one of the World’s greatest buildings famously the church itself is still being constructed and is not expected to be completed until 2026 at the earliest; 100 years after Antoni Gaudi’s death. Gaudi gave his heart and sole to the project which he worked on for 40 years up till his death. His spirituality combining with his passion for botany, and geology heavily influenced the design which although art-nouveau in style is nevertheless unique in its conception. My drawing features the front portal of the Nativity Facde. CLICK ON THE IMAGE FOR FURTHER INFORMATION

Cuban Car Triage
Cuban Car Triage

Details

Because of the embargo and the shortage of petrol, the Cuban government prohibited the sale of vehicles to private citizens. Consequently American cars from the 40s and 50s have been kept running largely thanks to the ingenuity of their owners. Spare parts are not avaliable and so every day household items are often converted and put to use under the bonnet. I have grouped these three colourful classics as a triage as seen here although they are also available individually. CLICK ON THE IMAGE FOR FURTHER INFORMATION

Cadillac; Cuba
Cadillac; Cuba

Details

I saw this Cadillac 50 yards further down the street from ‘La Bodeguida Del Medio’ Hemmingways mojito Havana hideaway. The car was being lovingly tended to by its Cuban owner. The Cubans have developed incredible skills in adapting everyday items to become car parts otherwise unavaliable and essential to keep these 50 year old cars on the road.

Dodge; Cuba
Dodge; Cuba

Details

Classic american cars dating back to the 50s are as commonplace in Cuba as red buses on Oxford Street and yet the novelty never wears off. This Dodge is owned by the Hotel Sevilla built in 1918 and it brightly adornes the moorish features sitting in earshot of rehearsals at the Teatro Fausto opposite.

Chevrolet; Cuba
Chevrolet; Cuba

Details

For this, the third in my collection of classic cuban cars i have featured this chevrolet which I came across in the city of Trinidad. The owner of the car was the proud father of a girl celebrating her 15th birthday, a big 'coming of age' occassion in Cuba. She wore a beautiful dress and was chauffered around the city as Queen for a day.
